So Im going to take a break from FoG for a while and decided to get into Dux Bellorum. I wanted to know what would best fit for the AD367-793 period. The late romans line will work for late romans and romano british. But im wondering about figures for the pictish, welsh, and irish. Celtic range for Pictish welsh and Irish? Any help would be appreciated.

Goths work well for early Saxons.  I use Celts for the others you mention, although I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Per Broden's work in a similar area may be of help:

I did a similar project myself - using lighter romans for the british.

"AMO01 - Moorish Infantry" are really useful generics, perhaps for welsh. Saxons and "sea raiders" are easy from the gothic, saxon and viking ranges.

Peter, yeah I saw that, thats what made me pick up dux bellorum in the first place, really inspiring, however Im still running into the issue with the picts, theyre shield and overall look is just too unique for me to want to proxy them with just anything.

NeilM, I was looking at the moorish infantry, hoping I can get away with them, going to have to try that one out and see how I like it. Need something that looks good for scots/irish. Still would prefer dedicated lines for picts and scots/irish but doesnt seem like I have much of a choice atm lol.

I’m building armies for the period 795 - 1070 and I have used Moorish Infantry for generic LMI types like the Welsh.  I use Gothic foot for Strathclyde Welsh and other MI types.  The Armoured Vikings cover most of the Armoured HI types and the Saxon Fyrd cover the Anglo Saxon foot.  I have some Irregular Miniatures Pictish Foot (Needs must when Peter doesn’t have anything that can proxy).  Not sure what I will use as Scots-Irish and Irish.  Hence my Baccstarter request.

What about  AHI04 - Syrian Infantry they are under the Hittite range, they have square shields similar to those that the picts seem to be portrayed with for the period?  What are the features you are looking for in the Scots-Irish and Irish?

Depiction of the pictish and caledones from the dba book which pulls from various resources. Pictish  211AD-842AD "They left depictions of themselves on numerous symbol stones, bare-headed, straggly bearded and bare legged, wearing a long shirt and cloak, armed with a long spear grapsed in 2-hands and about half with a small shield, usually rectangular and grasped at the intersection of 2 diagonal sticks connecting the corner, slung behind. A few are shown instead with javelins or light axe, and there are depictions of crouching, archers with hooded cloak pulled up for concealment." Caledones : "75AD - 211AD pre scots, roman monunments from the area show warriors either whooly naked or naked to the waist and carrying sword and either an oval or small rectangular shield". Yeah I was looking at the syrian infantry, the headwear is an issue, and clothing variety is an issue.

And here you hit one of the major problems with the Picts.  We know relatively little about them.   Anyone attempting to produce figures will work on instinct and guesswork which will inevitably clash with someone else's instinct and guesswork.

Our 'wargamers' view of Picts depends mainly on the work of Phil Barker which was done some 30 plus years ago, and may or may not be accurate, but I am sure that a revision is in order.
