Standard User Posts: 183 David Kay 16th Feb 2015 08:04:00 I've developed my own rules for 6mm Ancients which I use for solo battles. There are some battle reports posted in the Little Battles thread on the Society of Ancients website (if anybody is struggling to fall asleep). |

WWII: Micro Melee (company-sized engagements), Mein Panzer 2 (battalion+ -sized engagements). Steve Virginia, USA |

Standard User Posts: 87 I am a spambot 25th Feb 2015 12:23:29 DBA, DBA RRR, HotT and DBN at present. For DBA I prefer the 2.2+ variant. With 6mm armies I particularly like the 'Big Battle DBA' format with 36 elements (plus camp followers) per side. I use 40mm wide bases with 2 ranks of infantry or cavalry. Some years ago I did a couple of 6mm DBA armies on bases for 25mm figures. I found painting all the figures a bit of a chore, and the armies not particularly convenient to play with. I don't think that 4 ranks of infantry is the best use of a 60mm wide base. Have a feeling that those armies might get re-based soon for another project, probably involving large bases again. For English Civil War etc. games I use a DBA period expansion called DBA RRR. I used to use DBR but after playing a couple of games of DBA RRR I found that I preferred the simpler DBA RRR game. Again, I use the 40mm wide base sizes with 4 times as many figures as would be recommended for larger figurres. I have Hordes of the Things armies in 28mm, 15mm and 6mm figures sizes. These include historical armies with extras not available in DBA. Again, I find the BBDBA with 40mm wide bases format of games particularly satisfying using 6mm armies. DBN is a set of wargames rules for the Napoleonic Wars which are not from the authors of DBA, DBM, DBMM, DBR and HotT. They are fast play rules that seem to give reasonable results, even for people vastly more knowledgable about the period than myself. The current version uses an attrition system. I use 60mm by 30mm bases for all units except for artillery and baggage. I find it better to use deeper bases for the artillery so that I can include limbers on the base, and also restrict movement in the immediate rear of the guns. I also like large baggage bases. One reason that I went for larger bases with Napoleonics includes the fact that you can have flags without having the colour party comprise 1/4 of the unit. It is also easier to have the colour party in the middle of the front rank. There is also more room for attrition markers (I use casualty figures). DBN includes 3 grades of troops, from milita to elite. With the 60*30mm bases it is easy to indicate elite by having troops at the front of the base, and militia at the rear. |
Standard User Posts: 8 Brasidas 10th Mar 2015 12:29:47 So far I have not got local war gamer friends so do solo. DBA for quick games, Hail Caesar for a bit longer. Currently using cardboard counters until I buy some figures. 40 mm frontage would allow units to be interchangeable - 1 unit for DBA would be 1 of 4 in a HC unit. |
