Hi

I've come into my posseision some FPW French including cavalry which are either Dragoon or Currassiers. Is there a way to identify which is which as it is hard to tell from the website photos?

Hi, if I remember correctly, the saddle cloth was square cut for Kuirassiers, more rounded on the Dragoons.. Hope that helps :-)

I have just looked at my own - yes, that is the main difference!

Dragoons have a carbine slung across their back, Curiassiers do not.

The French cuirassiers and dragoons both used a plain grey saddle cloth on campaign in 1870. It was the Prussian cuirassiers who sported a square shabraque, whilst the Prussian dragoons sported one with rounded edges, as did the uhlans. The Prussian hussars had a rounded corner at the front and a long pointed corner at the rear.
