Some five hundred years after the start of Mankind’s expansion into space, there was still no sign of any intelligent life, never mind other space-faring civilisations. Man was becoming accustomed to the fact that the planets that were constantly being discovered were there for Humans to colonise and exploit without challenge.

The abundance of planets made available by the development of the Fractal Drive meant that competition for resources became a rarity. Conflict became infrequent and armed forces small and relatively underdeveloped. What fighting there was arose as a result of political differences, inter-corporation and industrial rivalries and good old fashioned piracy. However, the rise of powerful political alliances such as the Unity dominated Consys was the cause of increasing armaments spending and development by the 2440’s.
