TOPIC: Basing grenadiers for the Sun King period |
Based on the previous query how are people basing grenadiers for the 1680s/90s? I am looking at building French and Dutch forces in particular. Also, were batallion guns common at this time?

Dour,
As before the grenadiers in battles are overwhelmingly with the parent unit in this era. I personally normally put them in with the unit - 2 or 4 figures on the right of a base.
If you are doing French and Dutch be warned that the grenadiers in these armies usually looked just like everyone else, except for a few details.
On battalion guns the answer is yes and no. 'Real' battalion guns were developed in the 1720's and 30's and only became common in the 1740's. By 'real' I mean how most people think of these guns.
In this period, and up to circa 1740, all armies had 'regimental guns' which were field guns, they were in fact the standard field gun of this time. They were roughly 3 times the weight of later 'battalion guns' and more or less immobile. They could be used as 'batteries' or parcelled out a few each to the frontline units, but they of course couldn't move.
How you would do these on the table depends on the rules you use.
For all armies usually 50 to 75% of the guns were 'regimental guns'.

Many thanks for the information. It will make doing the armies I have selected a little easier.
