Which Type of Grass

What's everyone's choice of grass in terms of colour or type for Fatmid/Crusade bases?  Was thinking of going arid but just wondering if perhaps a colour that was similar to rough grass might look better.

I would think patchy rather than a lawn, and mostly arid but with (small) splashes of green and a couple of brown scrubby bushes.

When choosing grass for Fatmid/Crusade miniature bases, many hobbyists opt for colors and textures that reflect the thematic setting of their armies. An arid style is popular, featuring beige, light brown, or dry yellowish tufts that evoke a desert or dry environment. This look pairs well with dusty or cracked earth textures, creating an immersive desert battlefield atmosphere. Using plant details like marram grass or other dune-like greens with muted tones can add authenticity to this look.

Alternatively, for a rough grass appearance that suggests a more temperate or wild grassland environment, lighter shades of muted green or faded greens work best. This style uses patchy, uneven static grass and tufts with a natural variation in color to give a more organic and lively base. Mixing small tufts of grass in different shades adds visual interest and breaks up monotony. This style is often enhanced by layering with textured paint or basing materials to avoid flatness and create realism.

In crafting these bases, hobbyists often use static grass applicators for a more natural stand-up effect on the fibers and combine different lengths and colors of grass tufts for depth. Adding extra texture with rough filler, brown washes, and dry brushing before applying grass enhances the base further. The choice ultimately depends on the story and environment one wants to portray, whether it’s an arid desert wasteland or a rugged grassland battlefield.
