TOPIC: Republican Roman colour question |
Standard User Posts: 10 Jonny 30th Jul 2018 09:22:16 Hi all, I’m planning on getting some 6mm Republican Romans and I’ve scouted the internet for painting guides and reference photos. I just can decide on what colour to use for the helmets. I mostly have Vallejo paints but am happy to buy new paints. Does anyone have a top tip for what colour to use for the helmets? Thanks! Jonny, I guess that's around the time of the Punic Wars? Helmets were mostly bronze color. Are these your first tiny guys? (otherwise I'm preaching to the converted) Always go for lighter and brighter with 6mm. So bronze is gold, it has to be for people to notice. I use a slightly mattish, almost silvery gold for helmets (Vallejo Ore Viejo 70.878), and a different warmer gold (Army Painter Greedy Gold) for standards and trumpets. But that's just my suggestion...

Standard User Posts: 429 njt236 31st Jul 2018 08:13:39 I use Vallejo Brass 801 for helmets and Cornu as Roman bronze tended to be more brass like in colour and isn't as dark as Vallejo Bronze which I use for my Greeks. Standard User Posts: 10 Jonny 1st Aug 2018 07:04:52 Thanks for the reply Nigel. Out of the paints I have already I was thinking VMC Brass or VGC Glorious Gold, so I’ll probably give the VMC Brass a bash! |
Standard User Posts: 429 njt236 2nd Aug 2018 11:20:31 I forgot to mention I add a light tone wash over the brass just to dullen it a bit. Through the travail of the ages Midst the pomp and toil of war Have I fought and strove and perished Countless times upon this star. G S Patton |
Standard User Posts: 10 Jonny 4th Aug 2018 04:16:11 Thanks for the tip! I’m going to have a good dig through my paints to figure out the rest of my colour scheme. Any general dos and donts for painting republican Romans and Carthaginians, or advice on specific colours to use, would be appreciated! |
