I've always refrained from being one of the "please make me xxxxxx figures," (insert "rune carving Viking prophetesses", or "Osowiec fortress soldiers"). But here I am, beseeching you, Master of 6mm, to consider expanding the Fantasy line. You mentioned this as a possibility once before, as an aside. But something or other garnered your attention, and given the excellent expansion of your selections, I cannot argue with the decision. However, I believe there are good reasons to reconsider Fantasy: 1. The lack of fantasy figures in 6mm offers an opportunity. Other lines have dropped or paused their fantasy offerings (Irr*****r), or have a limited range (Perf*****x). Another company does fine work, but the owner recently posted a glum assessment of sales and the woes of his debilitating schedule. I believe he is a fellow American, and given our chaotic economic/trade situation, his hard times are probably not over. 2. Fantasy is a gateway drug. I came into miniatures from historical wargames long ago with Hinchcliffe and Heroics and Ross. Fantasy was a late, snd secondary interest. But nowadays, things have flipped. Warhammer brought a chosen few to historical miniatures. I believe a renewed line of Baccus fantasy would have a similar effect. The cost, ease of painting, and look of massed battles was what drew me to 6mm in the first place. The high quality of Baccus made me a fan and a dedicated customer. I believe this would ndpure interest in a solid fantasy line, and could even lead to historical gaming with the massive Baccus catalogue. 3. Finally, I would be interested if I am a lone wolfrider, or there are others who might condider a renewed fantasy line? Artistically it would provide scope for creativity and a lot of fun for creators. And maybe there are other daughters out there hoping to build their fantasy armies, as well.

Any new (or extended) fantasy range could do with some larger creatures that might be awkward to fit in a game using 15mm or 28mm figures. Suddenly giant eagles with huge wingspans, Ents and mammoths can fit on bases. Airboats of a size that didn't look too silly would be easier to base. I suggest that fantasy games in 6mm benefit from creatures or vehicles significantly larger than a horseman. Then we come to heroes. "Hordes of the Things" seems to have been written for 15mm and 25mm figures. A Hero base might have between 1 and 3 mounted figures, whereas a cavalry base would probably have 3 mounted figures. The Hero base is the same size as a base of Cavalry or Knights, and is assumed to include heroically inspired but otherwise ordinary troops. That is fine if all your heroes fight in the role of souped-up Knights, but what happens if you want heroes to have different roles? (William Tell and Robin Hood spring to mind.) With 6mm it would be possible to base heroes on small bases that can be put on that of the unit they are supporting, so that heroes on their own would not usually do well fighting whole units of enemy, but massively improve the performance of whatever unit they are with. Magicians in 6mm would be best with fome of their surroundings (such as magic circle or pentagram) included, in my opinion. |
Coming from Warhammer, surely the new Italian Wars range is suitable for some sort of Empire army. Funny how people who crave power seldom have an interest that is affected by their bizarre cravings. Golf cheating is, of course, not affected by anything, including conscience. A little goes a long way |

The answer appearsto be that there is limited demand for 6 mm fantasy. It also requires more thought in terms of what fantasy? Tolkienesque? (Not) GW Old World? Something different or unique? Which races? How would you model them and make them look distinct? You could end up with a huge increase in the catalogue but limited sales of each range. Marketing it would be hard as you can't infringe on other's IP but it is this IP that drives people to it. It could be quite a challenge as well - imagine trying to sculpt a skeleton in 6 mm! |

For humans there is probably a lot spread across the various historical ranges that will do the job. For non-human but human-sized beasts, I'm not too sure what else besides hordes of goblins (half my painting queue if full of them at the moment!) and dwarves is there that can be represented effectively at 6mm? Rapier Miniatures produce 2 ranges (Fantasy and Greek Myth) of 6mm sized beasts and the Irregular Miniatures 6mm collection is now under new management (and if you promise them an order they might move the fantasy stuff up the getting-back-in-action order). In terms of large fantasy beasts you are not bound by the scale. There is a lot out there at 10mm, 15mm and even larger scales that you can purloin for the roles. I posted a photo recently where an old 25mm dragon took on my 6mm Sarmatians. You might try to argue it was over-scale but it is Fantasy after all! |

The young chap showed a bit more interest in these than he did in my usual fare of Spartans, Romans and Persians but not enough for him to shout "and where can I buy some from?" |
