TOPIC: Ascarin's 6mm Madness |
Standard User Posts: 40 Ascarin 28th Jul 2020 02:11:26 Ok so I've finally bitten the 6mm bullet and painted up some miniatures. This is a mock up base 60x60mm base and is not finished yet (obviously), I'm still debating the metal plate on the back, and whether I'll just remove this and put something along the lines of 1st Division/1st Brigade Regiment of Foot, but I'm still thinking about this. I'm waiting for some 7mm Dice frames which will also go on the rear of the base to be used denote various actions/statuses etc from various game systems. https://imgur.com/gallery/jJP0E8C Also any tips on how to post the pictures here, as I can't work out the insert image option when editing a post. |

Before you go any further you might want to zoom in on what rules your going to use and exactly what a base will represent. Some rules use a figure ratio not a base ratio. Polemos rules don't require base labels, only the commanders have them. They also don't require dice holders. So if your striving for a great diorama look these features are major distractions. If your striving for a battalion on a base then your going to have a lot of open space to fill in and your eating up valuable table space in the rear. Their also awkward to move in close quarters with other bases. Some people who use British and British trained units only have two ranks as that was their common line formation. They show the other countries in three ranks. Most people simply put everybody in two ranks. If your going to make this a brigade base then some people put three single rows with command stands spaced out to indicate the three battalions in line in a British brigade. French are often shown as four battalions in columns of three stands. The options are entirely up to you and your creativity. At this level of abstraction the actual historical formations of a brigade are ignored.

Standard User Posts: 40 Ascarin 4th Aug 2020 11:17:15 Ok, so I've settled on a 40mm x 30mm base size for my Battalions: |
Standard User Posts: 404 Glenn Pearce 4th Aug 2020 02:12:03 Ok, next you have to pick a rule set and see if that base size is compatible or not. You will also have to establish a base size for your artillery, limbers & wagons and commanders. |
Standard User Posts: 40 Ascarin 4th Aug 2020 02:50:59 Hi Glenn, I've already decided on the ruleset..... my own! :) I'm writing a blog so that I can show my thought processes throughtout the writing of the rules |
Standard User Posts: 404 Glenn Pearce 4th Aug 2020 03:04:32 Good luck, that's an extremely difficult thing to do and will eat up a lot of time. Mine took seven years, with a number of play testers and dozens of rewrites. However writing just for yourself should be easier and quicker. Looking forward to hearing how it goes. |
Best of luck, I will read that with great interest. |
