TOPIC: I might be. Using the point of 6mm.... |
Standard User Posts: 16 Munds3 17th Oct 2020 04:52:33 So my good friend and my wife tell me that I might be missing the point of 6 mm figures. If the link to the first picture works you can see our use 12 colors in a wash the paint up nine Napoleonic Prussian musketeers.... Maybe I should use less colors! Suggestions? My good friend said if you're planning to paint hundreds of these there might be a problem!!???????????????? link1: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1P3UhLGq3YEXnRdtBZClDOBOsoBasg2b1/view?usp=sharing link2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13BE-DLOKGbjaNc-_3Gjuc1NuGJE3e-n9/view?usp=sharing

Another issue to consider is how bright the colours are. The smaller the scale, the brighter the colours need to be. This is hard to evaluate from photographs. Bright highlights can make the various elements of the uniforms and caps, helmets, shakos, etc really 'pop'. Prussian blue is a dark colour for example. Small dabs of a bright blue on the forearms, arms, exposed upper parts of the uniform and/or bottom edges of the uniform (if visible) will significantly enhance the appearance. But it all depends on what you are aiming for. Robert |
Your brushstroke is precise and bravo for the faces. It seem necessary, as Robert indicates, for the 6mm figures, to use clearer or vivid colors ... even if this may seem unhistorical! Standard User Posts: 404 Glenn Pearce 17th Oct 2020 02:33:00 Your work is amazing, top notch. I don't put a wash on 6mm figures as it has tendency to, well wash out the colours. If you want highlights or even shading try some light dry brushing. I rarely do that as well. I simply finish them off with a very light coat of artists matte varnish. It blends the colours together and gives the figures a very low shine that fades over time but keeps the colours bright. |
Standard User Posts: 182 rsjahn 17th Oct 2020 02:48:40 I'm using dark brown ink for washing; some minutes later I go over the figures again with es thick, clean and moist brush to wipe off ink from the surface. So the colours stay bright and the wash stays where it belongs. |
Standard User Posts: 44 rbatch 18th Oct 2020 01:09:35 I have used a 50:50mix of tamiya X19 smoke and water with a dolope of flat base for about 25 years. Since its not that dark it doesn't muddy up the colours too much. Cheers, Rhys. |

Standard User Posts: 45 mcolbert 19th Oct 2020 11:56:09 I've got to second the use of X19 smoke. It will be interesting to see how it goes as I change over to enamels as well. |
