Looks great.  What do the brown and green lines signify on your mat?

The brown lines are roads, the green lines indicate the edges of woods.I use rewashable fabric markers so I can reuse the sheet for another battle :)

The Second Battle of Bull Run (also called the Second Battle of Manassas) was a major battle of the American Civil War, fought from August 28 to August 30, 1862, in Prince William County, Virginia. It was a significant Confederate victory that solidified General Robert E. Lee’s reputation as a brilliant commander and paved the way for the Confederate invasion of the North.

Background

  • After the Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run (July 1861), Union forces under Major General John Pope formed the Army of Virginia to protect Washington, D.C., and threaten Richmond.
  • General Robert E. Lee, leading the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, sought to strike Pope before he could be reinforced by Major General George McClellan’s Army of the Potomac.

Key Commanders

  • Union: Major General John Pope
  • Confederate: General Robert E. Lee, with Generals Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet

The Battle

August 28, 1862 – Opening Skirmishes

  • Stonewall Jackson positioned his forces near an unfinished railroad grade to lure Union troops into battle.
  • Heavy fighting broke out at Brawner’s Farm, where Jackson’s men clashed with Union forces under General Brigadier General Rufus King.

August 29, 1862 – Union Attacks

  • Pope, believing Jackson’s forces were retreating, launched multiple assaults against the Confederate line.
  • Jackson’s men held strong, despite heavy fighting and low supplies.

August 30, 1862 – Longstreet’s Devastating Counterattack

  • Pope, convinced the Confederates were retreating, ordered another attack.
  • James Longstreet’s 28,000-strong Confederate corps launched a massive counterattack on the Union left flank.
  • The Union army was overwhelmed and forced into a chaotic retreat toward Washington, D.C.

Aftermath & Significance

  • Casualties:
    • Union: ~14,000 killed, wounded, or missing
    • Confederate: ~8,300 killed, wounded, or missing
  • The battle was a major Confederate victory, boosting Southern morale.
  • It exposed the weaknesses in Union leadership, leading to Pope being removed from command.
  • Lee capitalized on the victory by launching the Maryland Campaign, which led to the Battle of Antietam (September 1862).

Would you like more details on any part of the battle?
