This pitted Soult's veteran French II Corps against a Portuguese force twice their number but comprised almost entirely of ordonenza levies – like militia but not as good. This made for a thoroughly absorbing game with a different flavour. Photo-AAR of Mark's Baccus figures in action here. |
Really interesting game (and result!). I have refought lots of Peninsular battles but never this one, it definitely makes me want to give it a go. I wonder how small a battle you could get with BBB and still make a good game out of it? |

I have stretched BBB's elastic troop scale to as few as 250 men per base, so you can have a 3- or 4-base battalion as your basic unit. It then becomes a question of how many battalions you think makes a good game. There's a scenario for Maida @ 300 men per base which has 6 French units vs 5 British - a bit small and simple for me, but many players are happy with that size game. And then there's Alan Millicheap, who's used BBB for Camerone with, I think, 5 men per base ... The ruleset's a very flexible toolkit. |
