TOPIC: FPW project |
Standard User Posts: 144 6mmwargaming 1st May 2018 11:22:53 Hi all This is a slow burning project I started maybe 2-3 years ago. We started with a copy of the 1870 rules and I brought Prussians and my friend brought French. Since then I have added Bavarians and I plan to also paint French so I can field both sides. I want enough to do all the battles and for the Imperial period except for perhaps Mars la Tour and Gravelotte and I an also thinking about doing the Republican period with Greatcoat figures etc. I'll post pictures of the earlier stuff when I find them, but in the meantime I have been concentrating on Bavarians. So here is a couple of 1870 units along with some skirmish bases
Thanks for looking |
They look superb. They are also based in such a way that you would be able to play Bloody Big Battles with them, enabling you to play both Mars la Tour and Gravelotte on a 6x4 table. BBB comes with 9 FPW battle scenarios, and there are a further 8 or 9 on the BBB Yahoo group site, as well as the maps for the scenarios in the rule book rendered in colour. Have you come across Bruce Weigle's 1871? This is an update of 1870 featuring more scenarios, particularly from the republican period, but more importantly it is an updating of the 1870 rules making them faster to play and removing some of the less needed levels of complexity. They are totally compatible with the scenarios already available in 1870.
A little goes a long way |
As a PS to the above, where did the model of the chateau come from? A little goes a long way |
Standard User Posts: 144 6mmwargaming 2nd May 2018 09:32:16 Thanks Yes I want to get the 1871 rules for the extra scenarios alone, and the rule changes sound great. Tha Chateau is a Leven model but I added an extension to the right of it. I hope to add something to my website about this soon. |
Can you kindly tell me where can I buy both 1870 and 1871 (better by INternet as I live abroad). Thanks. |
Standard User Posts: 144 6mmwargaming 2nd May 2018 08:57:38 I also live abroad (NZ) and ordered them from Caliver Books. |
Standard User Posts: 144 6mmwargaming 2nd May 2018 09:13:10 Next is a couple units of Prussian Uhlans. In the 1870 rules it is only 2 bases per cavalry unit and I have gone with 4 figures per base for light cavalry and 5 figures per base for Heavy cavalry. They are pretty quick to paint being small units so I can usually paint a few at a time. |
Thank you... I already am a customer of Caliver Books!... should heve guessed... |

It was the extension which threw me. I too am building a walled chateau using a slightly different Leven model. A little goes a long way |
