Hi All, any advice on painting the lace on tricornes would be appreciated. It's the only part that I seem to struggle getting anything like reasonable. Thanks in advance,

I am no expert painter, and I do WSS rather than SYW, but the two techniques I have tried are:

1 - careful hand line, always away-to-close.the idea here is that the most controlled movement is the pincer-pull between thumb and forefinger, so I use that one. When painting a strip, I do all the same lines for the four figures, and then turn the strip rather than change my hand position.

2 - drybrush the raised edges. this is a matter of getting the tilt right. any mistakes just paint over with black.

I wouldn't try to be too precise - the impression is the thing. just paint over really noticeable mistakes with black. I think getting the paint the right consistency to get a nice even brush stroke on a small point is really handy for this.

I would recommend you don't try and 'paint' the lace, but merely pull the side of the brush past the rim on each side. Do not put too much paint on the brush, and tidy up with black afterwards. Works for me!

I now do this with a fine paint brush, but occasionall and for quicker results, I use a white Mototow paint pen which is much easier to highlight the edges of the tricorn for the lace.  I think the tip is 1-2mm so is easy to apply.
