Hi ,

I am starting a WW1 Palestine project. Are there any sugestions for Vallejo colours for the uniforms for both sides?

Cheers,Kevin

You will probably need to look at how those colours are depicted in paintings and uniform plates, then have a look at the various buffs and beiges produced by Vallejo. One thing I have found with Vallejo paints is that anything puporting to be a uniform colour doesn't work for World War I. Also have a look at the thread on on the landings in Turkey.

Assuming Baccus figures for both sides, I recommend:

  • A very dark brown for the shoes (both sides), something like Model Colour 872 - Chocolate Brown. I then apply a dot of paint to the top of the shoes, something like Leather Brown
  • Model Colour 879 - Green Brown for the puttees (both sides)
  • Any flesh colour for knees of British Middle East and Australian figures
  • Green Brown for the trousers of the British Middle East and Australian, as well as the pants, jackets, and headgear for the Ottoman figures. Green Brown also for the hats worn by the Australians
  • Highlight the Green Brown with Khaki.
  • Paint British Middle East tropical helmets with Khaki.
  • Consider a further highlight of Panzer Aces 321 - Highlight British Tank Crew, e.g. the bottom of trousers, shoulder area on Ottoman jackets, and the headgear.
  • Stonewall Grey for the shirts worn by the British Middle East and Australian figures.
  • Highlight the shirts with Ghost Grey.
  • Leather Brown for the arms, faces, and rifles.
  • Highlight arms and faces with the flesh colour
  • Highlight rifles with Panzer 11 New Wood or equivalent lighter wood colour
  • Model Colour 820 - Offwhite for forage bags, with brown wash and then rehighlight with Offwhite
  • Dark grey, e.g. Model Colour 995 - German Grey for the water bottles.
  • Small dot of Stonewall Grey as highlight for water bottles.

I should have added:

  • Paint rim and upper section of tropical helmet with off-white, leaving the cloth band at above rim in Khaki
