I'd actually forgotten how good his French look from the front, most of the time all I saw were their backs (equally well-painted). |

Many's the time Nick would wander over to my side of the table, just to see what things looked like when you play a proper army like the French. I'd usually ignore his sighs of regret out of politeness ;) In all seriousness, Maurice is a smashing game for the period. Period tactics work well within the mechanics, there are meaningful choices, and it lends itself to both historical re-fights and more open play. I don't think I've ever not had fun playing it. FMB |

Specifically written for GNW and WSS they will punish anyone who tries to think that they are Napoleonics in funny hats. Once you understand the rules they play fairly fast. Command and control is VERY important and losing this is the easiest way to lose the battle. Historically accurate tactics are rewarded and wrong ones punished. They can do this because the rule set is targeted at a mere 20 year period of change - The rules don't have to allow for 7YW or even WAS wargames. |
Although they do not specifically mention 6mm figures, the Pike and Shot Society's Twilight of the Sun King rules are designed to be played with two 60x30 bases forming a unit (one base for artillery). They are unusual in that you just declare that you are shooting or meleeing, then everything is worked out on a morale table. Movement is the last action in your turn. Bombardment is your first action in your enemy's turn. I am intending to do some of the later C17th stuff using the forthcoming Sun King range, but the rules cover right up to 1721. A little goes a long way |
I've bought TWIGLET as well, meanwhile, and my first impression is that going with 60x30 bases would enable me to do both TWIGLET and Maurice with them, so that's great. Now I'm just waiting for Peter to pack up his JOS wreckage and find the time to publish the Wars of the Sun King range in the catalogue. I feel like in ye olde days when we used to wait for an album by our favourite band to come out. Going to hit him for at least two army packs, prolly (probably, as some people say ;-) ) more. |

The Wars of the Sun King range is indeed exciting. P.S. There is no such word in the English language as "prolly"! ;) |
Yeah, but there is a brolly to cope with the British weather, which will probably break again this week. I am also excited about this impending range and using it with Twiglet. A little goes a long way |
I know about 'prolly', it's just spoken English in some quarters, short for 'probably'. A joke...
and the y which is actually a Þ, yep, that too... |
Prolly certainly doesn't seem to have any traction in NW England, North Wales or the Northeast, all areas I am familiar with. Might be some southern affectation. Closest we get up here is 'probly'. Trying to learn Spanish at the moment and immensely frustrating as there also seems to be no consistency in pronunciation or relation to spelling and spoken. Pretty much about to give it up and go with the traditional approach to British language learning - talk loud and slow. A little goes a long way |
