I am delighted to say the 3rd scenario book for the 'Twilight of the Sun King' rules is now available from the Pike and Shot Society - https://www.pikeandshotsociety.org/

It features 15 battle scenarios from the War of the Grand Alliance (1688-97) and the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14).

In addition recommended optional and amended rules are included for pursuit, replacing commanders, using D6 and an alternative play sequence. Finally also includes are modified quick reference play sheets for the above changes and also one for this era only, i.e. without unit types not used in these wars.

This booklet features the following scenarios.

THE WAR OF THE GRAND ALLIANCE (1688-97)

  • WALCOURT, 1689
  • STAFFARDA, 1690
  • AUGHRIM, 1691
  • STEENKIRK, 1692
  • TER RIVER/TORROELLA, 1694

THE WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION (1701-14)

  • CHIARI, 1701
  • FRIEDLINGEN, 1702
  • HOCHSTADT, 1703
  • THE SCHELLENBERG, 1704
  • CASSANO, 1705
  • TURIN, 1706
  • OUDENAARDE, 1708
  • MALPLAQUET, 1709

Hwicce (Nick?),

This looks great! Just going back to the first scenario book and the Blenhiem scenario...what table size and number of figures would be required for the scenario as written?

Sean,

Yes it is Nick. The number of figures and table size are completely up to you. Everything is measured in BW's which are half the frontage of whatever units you are using. Usually we use a standard 6mm bases of 60mm frontage. For game like Poltava, which I think you saw at the Joy of Six, we use 4 standard bases for a unit and so a BW is 120mm. If you wanted to say use 1 base as a unit then the BW would be 30mm.

The table size is 40BW by 20BW. So if you used two standard bases per unit then the table would be 2.4m by 1.2m (8 foot by 4 foot in Imperial). If you wanted to use one standard base per unit then the table would be half that 1.2m by .6m (4 foot by 2 foot). Obviously other combinations are possible.

It is the same with the number of figures. It doesn't matter how many figures you put on a base or how many bases per unit you use.

On a quick count there are 'British' 36 infantry/cavalry units and 5 guns & French 37 infantry/cavalry units and 6 guns in the battle. So that could be around 40 bases a side or more depending on how many you want in a unit.

Does that make sense?

Nick

Nick the Lemming: Sorry not yet and I think it will be a while. The plan now is trial other society sets and then perhaps these.

Are you in the USA? If yes I think OMM are going to stock the series so that might help.

Mollinary: Thank you for your kind words and I hope you like them.

Hi Nick,

No, Canada, postage from the US is about the same as from the UK, and when the US leaves the global postal union in October, likely to be a lot more expensive than from the UK (the minimum rise is likely to be 300% according to one article a while back).
