![]() Standard User Posts: 56 Unit Names/Nomenclaturesrfaruqui 25th Feb 2020 09:19:42 My friends and I have started using the "Black Powder" family of rules as they enable us to learn only one set of basic game mechanics to cover 3,500 years of recorded violence and are flexible enough to "play the period". They don't stop games becoming an ale-fuelled contact sport, but that's probably unresolvable. Our only issue is with the use of the word/description "unit" - not a problem where we know the real words - "battalion", "cohort", "squadron", etc., but detracting from the flavour when: a) the language/records have been lost or forgotten b) the "unit" may never have existed but is a nessercary game construct In a recent game, to describe a mob of sartorially-challenged Ancient British wing-nuts as a "unit" did not seem right, so we adopted the historically inaccurate, but culturally relevant, term "millwall" (non-English readers of this post may want to google Millwall FC Supporters) as in "the two Briganti millwalls on the left will advance to commit ABH on that cohort of the XXVI Legio Real Aelix.". Does anyone else out there have any terms or descriptors they use for long-lost military units and formations? BikesBrownBeer&ToySoldiers

![]() Standard User Posts: 56 Unit Names/Nomenclaturesrfaruqui 26th Feb 2020 07:03:19 Except that, in the context of the example I cited, "Clan" could represent the entire army. I was more interested in ideas for tactical unit designations, serious or otherwise. BikesBrownBeer&ToySoldiers
