You can always play late summer/Autumn 1914 and dispense with trenches. Seriously though there are two methods. One is to build a generic trench playing area by carving trench systems into styrene boards. The other is to use table top trench sections. These have relatively vertical back and front inner sides, but slope away to the front and back. Between the trench systems you can place free standing shell craters, barbed wire sections etc. Though less realistic the second method is more flexible. A third way is simply to represent them as 2D strips on the table surface and stand the figures on them. Whichever method you use be sure that your figure bases fit inside them. A little goes a long way |

Standard User Posts: 207 monk2002uk 10th Apr 2021 05:14:08 I use TimeCast latex trenches now but, prior to that, I used a stencil with a crenallated pattern to spray paint the outline of trenches in black. The pattern was _!---!_!---!_ cut out from a piece of cardboard (the dotted lines should be at the top of the exclamation marks but hopefully you get the idea). It gives the impression of trenchlines snaking across the terrain. The stands are placed on top of the 'trenches' because the scale of the games in Great War Spearhead is such that a single line of trenches on the table represents at least two parallel lines of trenches with their interconnecting communication and switch trenches. Most of the trench lines are covered with stands but you can make out the crenallated pattern in some places. Apologies for the poor quality of the photo. It was taken back in the 'early days': Robert |
