TOPIC: Crimean War Proxies |
Standard User Posts: 4 Chad 13th Jan 2017 02:51:45 Can anyone suggest proxies for Russian infantry in the Crimean War? There do not seem to be any figures in greatcoats. There seem to be enough figures available that would pass for French and British. Thanks Chad

NPR2 Prussian Reserve Infantry NRU26 Russian Olpechnie - both these codes appear from the photos to be in greatcoat and soft cap and should therefore work as standard Russian infantry. A little goes a long way |
Standard User Posts: 426 njt236 30th Mar 2017 12:25:56 I was wondering what you guys think would be adequate proxies for the Heavy and Light brigades, Russian artillery, cavalry and lancers at Balaclava. For the 17th lancers I was thinking FPW Prussian Uhlans. Light Dragoons and Hussars for the Light Brigade. Scots Greys for the Heavy Brigade from the Britsh Napoleonics. The rest of the Heavy Brigade Prussian Dragoons from the FPW. Russian cavalry and Lancers not sure at the moment. Foot artillery Prussian from the FPW, as for the Russian horse artillery. ?????. I've seen some references that Russian infantry wore the FPW Prussian style helmet??? Thanking you in advance for some great ideas Nigel Through the travail of the ages Midst the pomp and toil of war Have I fought and strove and perished Countless times upon this star. G S Patton |
The Russians did also wear a spiked leather helmet in the Crimea, somewhat taller and with a longer spike than that sported by the Prussians in 1870. A little goes a long way |

I think this list is pretty much inclusive of every type of unit that fought in the Crimean War; if anyone thinks something is here that shouldn't be, or something is missing, please shout. I've given some suggestions as to proxies, but if anyone has better or extra ideas or doesn't think the suggestion fits, please say so, and if you have any suggestions for the gaps that can be filled in, also please say so.

Together we can come up with a decent proxy list, and anything that we need to complete the range (especially something like the Greatcoat Helmet Prussians that can be used for Russians too) can be added to the baccstarter lists. |
Standard User Posts: 426 njt236 2nd Oct 2017 04:28:20 That was excellent. Through the travail of the ages Midst the pomp and toil of war Have I fought and strove and perished Countless times upon this star. G S Patton |
Not sure about the Russian hussars as in the Crimea they wore a shako similar to the Napoleonic French shako. What about NBR 19 British hussar in shako (as the French is festooned with cords). Some illustrations of 1854 Russian hussars show them with the slung jacket. A little goes a long way |
