Hello all, I was looking at getting some of the crusades era hail caesar army packs and was wondering how many strips of minis equals "1 unit", and what the proper way to base them would be. Many thanks!

Noah.

Noah,

I have noticed that nobody else has picked up on your request, but I remembered a posting that Peter put into the General section of the Forum some time ago:

https://www.baccus6mm.com/forum/General/General/2079-1-HailCaesarStarterSetsSize/

You need to understand that, provided your basing is consistent, it is what the base represents that matters... not necessarily what is actually glued to it. You also need to factor in the question of your table size and the scale of the action. (Strongly suggest going with Peter's advice).

Hope this helps,

David.

Unit sizes are give in the army pack descriptions:

HCCRU - Hail Caesar Crusaders Army Pack

  • 1 unit of Holy Order Knights (CFR3)
  • 1 unit of Templar Knights (CFR3)
  • 2 units of Crusader Knights (CFR2)
  • 2 units of Mounted Sergeants (EMN2)
  • 3 Commanders
  • 4 units of Spearmen (CFR5)
  • 4 units of Crossbowmen (CFR6)
  • 2 mixed units of Sergeants, spears/bows (CFR5/EMN5)

Hail Caesar army compositions designed for Baccus by Rick Priestley. Unit sizes are:

  • Close order infantry units = 48 figures
  • Close order cavalry units = 18 figures
  • Small HI/MI infantry units = 16 figures
  • Small infantry units = 6 figures
  • Small cavalry units = 6 figures
  • Elephants, Chariots and bolt throwers = 1 model.

So, for example, you get 2 units of Crusader Knights (CFR3).   Close order cavalry units consist of 18 figures, so you will get 36 figures/12 strips, each of which will consist of 6 strips (1 command and 5 line)

From customer feedback, basing comes down to two options:

  • A unit consists of 3 40x20 bases, with each base containing 2 strips.. *
  • A unit consists of 2 60x30 bases, with each base containing 3 strips.

Both use the same number of figures.

Does that make things clearer?

* 40x20 bases are the work of the Devil and should be avoided at all costs, but don't let that sway your decision.

I have plans.   I am dangerous when I have plans...

Could the 60x60 be used for cavalry, which tends to attack in waves? It may make a more attractive diorama than 2 of 60x30

A little goes a long way
